About the program

The Oregon Department of Forestry’s Recreation, Education & Interpretation Program manage, steward, and help ensure these opportunities are available to the public, primarily in the Tillamook, Clatsop, and Santiam State Forests. Education and Interpretation (IE) services are mainly housed at the Tillamook Forest Center, located off Highway 6 in the Tillamook State Forest. Some IE services are also offered outside of the TFC at relevant events, conferences, or other opportunities.

The vision is to be the pathway for all to explore, learn about, and enjoy Oregon’s state forests. 

The REI Program’s mission is to create lasting and diverse outdoor recreational, interpretive, and educational opportunities that inspire visitors to enjoy, respect, and learn about Oregon’s state forests.

About Recreation

From trails and campgrounds to day-use areas, wildlife viewing, hunting, and fishing, state forests provide a unique connection to the land. Whether you set out on a trail on horseback, wheels, or on your own two feet, state forests offer one-of-a-kind recreation opportunities for all ages and abilities.

The Recreation Program manages 20 developed campgrounds, 10 designed dispersed camping areas, and over 30 trailheads, along with nearly 150 miles of non-motorized trails and over 350 miles of motorized trails. Encourages using Leave No Trace principles and checking out tips from Treadlightly.org to minimize impact while recreating.

About the Tillamook Forest Center

Find yourself in the forest. Located at the heart of the Tillamook State Forest, the region’s newest interpretive and educational center showcases the legacy of the historic Tillamook Burn and the public spirit behind a monumental reforestation effort that left a permanent imprint on Oregon history while also shaping sustainable forest management today.

No other place in Oregon or the Northwest provides the forest-based learning opportunities found at the Tillamook Forest Center. The TFC is distinguished by its forest surroundings, its focus on forest history, the power of wildfire, and the art and science of sustainable forest management today.
