Rediscover Oregon's Forestry Stories
With April designated as Arbor Month in Oregon, State Forests Trust is please to sponsor a presentation by Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center and the Vernonia Pioneer Museum at the Tillamook Forest Center (TFC) on their work to record and preserve the historic contributions foresters have made in Oregon.
Join a Community Conversation about Oregon State Forests
For decades, local chapters of Oregon Equestrian Trails (OET) have partnered with the Oregon Department of Forestry(ODF) to help design, build, and maintain horse camps. They also help steward non-motorized trails used by horseback riders, as well as hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers. Many of the non-motorized trails on Oregon State Forests are classified as multiple-use.

Want to Build a Trail? Build a Community
Like many who love mountain biking, Ryan McLane has traveled all over Oregon to ride the state’s renowned trails.
At one point, though, he and a group of friends wondered why they had to drive so far to ride when the coastal mountain range was just a half hour away from the Portland metro area - the nearby forests had the potential for a great ride. Then, he started dreaming of creating a mountain bike trail network on Larch Mountain in the Tillamook State Forest.
New Opportunities Coming On The Wilson River Trail
The Wilson River Trail travels along a major river corridor in the Tillamook State Forest on the Coast Range. Construction began in 1998 and 1999, connecting a mix of old logging roads, user trails, and fishermen’s access routes. Volunteer and professional crews shaped the 24.3 trail that today is a gateway for hiking, angling, mountain biking, camping, foraging, and picnicking. A short drive from Portland, it offers fantastic views, lush landscapes, and miles of trails for diverse use. Here, there is something for everyone!

Nancy Pyburn grew up in a ‘timber family.’ “Our life revolved around the forests of the Coast Range,” she says. Her father, Harry, logged up and down those forests as his way to be outdoors despite initially training as an accountant.
Connecting with Oregon’s Forests: A Personal Journey and Exciting Updates from Dave Lorenz, Trustee
I was thrilled to join the Board of the State Forests Trust of Oregon (the Trust) in December 2022. The Trust’s mission of connecting people to the wonders of our state forests resonates deeply for me. Before retiring in June, 2021, I served for over 30 years in a variety of roles with the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). As a forester, I worked to protect Oregon’s forests from wildfire, manage state forests, and help private landowners manage their forests. In some small way, I feel I was able to have a positive impact on the forests that we enjoy today.

In March 2023, we received the results of a year-long pilot project at Black Rock Mountain Bike Area to understand visitor use patterns, spending and health benefits. We know intuitively that Oregon’s state forests provide great recreation opportunities, but we have lacked data that support effectively managing these sites. Information on the amount and character of visitor use is essential. The pilot project at Black Rock is a step toward developing scalable methods to collect this information across state forest lands. Here’s some of what we learned:

After the Labor Day 2020 fires that impacted almost half of the Santiam State Forest, the State Forests Trust of Oregon established a fund to assist with the restoration of recreation areas and to offer learning opportunities about wildfire. Many generous donors have contributed well over $20,000 to the fund.
